At just £239 the DeWalt XRP DC988L1 18V is a good value DeWalt 18V XRP Lithium-ion combi drill.

DeWalt XRP DC988L1 Combi DrillIt gives you everything you’d expect from DeWalt XRP i.e. high quality all metal gearing and metal chuck, 3 speed settings allowing you to select the right mode for different applications and torque levels and a lightweight Nano-Phosphate Li-ion battery.

As you’d expect, it has a quality feel, nice and solid with 22 torque settings that give you a satisfying click when you rotate it. The electronic brake makes the drill very efficient to work with, the chuck slowing down rapidly as soon as your finger leaves the trigger – ideal if you’re driving rows of screws.

Just one battery? Is this a problem?

The drill comes with just one battery – a decent 2.0Ah rate pack rechargeable in 40 minutes. However if you think you’ll need a second you can get a replacement XRP Li-ion Nano battery for £90 (50% off) if you buy it at the same time as the DeWalt XRP DC988L1 18V. It’s worth knowing that this drill is backwards compatible with other DeWalt batteries too (Ni-CAD and Ni-MH packs). So if you’ve got older 18V batteries in your toolbox, you’ll be able to draw on those too.

The DeWalt XRP DC988L1 has 3 drill speeds and a no Load Speed of 0-500/0-1700rpm. It delivers a very respectable drilling capacity in steel (13 mm diameter holes) and wood (50mm).

Batteries

The drill runs of a lightweight 18V Lithium-Ion battery, and only one is supplied. At 2.0Ah is mid-range for performance. The charge time is 40 minutes, better than many cordless combi batteries but not as quick as the newer Makita batteries.
